  1. My major is Psychology and I found some pretty interesting facts about my major. According to the National Mental Institute of Health 26.2% of Americans suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder. 45% of Americans suffer from two or more mental disorders. I also did some research on the Youth in America as well. 8.6% of American boys have ADHD. 3.7% of American females had depression. 0.7% of American youth had anixiety disorders. 0.1% of American youth had an eatuing disorder.

  2. According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), social work is one of the fastest growing careers in the United States. The profession is expected to grow 30% by 2010; currently, nearly 600,000 people hold social work degrees.
This shows that my profession should be successful. Jods will be available as the years increase. These statistics are meaningful because I will be able to find a job.

  3. I want to open my own restaurant and according to the National Restaurant Association the restaurants' share of the food dollar has risen fron 25% of the dollar in 1955 to 48.8% of the dollar today. This means that more people are eating out and this makes me want to hurry up and open my restaurant so I can make some money.

  5. Good start, students. However, you will want to discuss a bit more about what these statistics themselves mean in general and to you. Do you understand how it was calculated? Is 8.6% or 25% a lot to you? Just listing the numbers doesn't really tell us enough about your comprehension and analysis of the issue.

Also, be careful... I have already found one error in presentation here. Someone wrote the information wrong, and it gives a totally incorrect impression.

My major is social work, and I will be working with the mental health. One of the articles I found was on autism. Autism is a brain disorder that interferes with communication, 1 in 110 American 8year old boys in 2006, according to federal studies. Studies have shown that since 2006 the rate of boys with autism has gone up.1 in 150.

After the 2000 census report came out people in NC reacted many different ways to the statistic that the increase of the Latino population in NC was 398% While that is a huge increase, what most people who acted as if the state was being taken over by Latinos failed to realize is that before the 2000 cnesus there were very very few Latinos in the state. So if for example there is a population of 0 (zero) and then ten years later you have a population of 398 well you have just experienced a 398% increase, however 398 people is not a whole lot of people. Statistical data is very tricky - or better said the use of statistica data can be very tricky. I am working on looking at ways to increase the allocation of resources to agricultural support agencies based on statisical data from the 2007 agricultural census which shows an increase of Latino farmers in NC in the past ten years of 130% Using the same priciple that many folks used to create a sense of panic about the increase of the growth of the general latino population growth, I am arguing that the rate of increase of latino farmers is cause for an equal amount of increase in the resources allocated to minortiy farmers. That is really not the whole picture because there may already be enough resources (but probably not) but they may not be accessable by minoruty farmers for reason other than availability. It seems like with statistical data you not only have to support the accuracy of that data but you have to be prepared to defend it because there are many variables or factors that can weaken the effect of your statistical data.

  10. Identity theft is becoming an extremely common crime because of all the advances technology continues to make in todays society. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics in 2005, about 1.6 million households experienced theft of existing accounts other than a credit card. 1.1 million households discovered misuse of personal information (such as a social security number). About 7 in 10 households victimized by identity theft reported a financial loss. The average amount was $1,620. Identity theft is a growing crime that should be important to everyone because it is very hard to prove identity theft in alot of cases. Knowing about identity theft statistics can help to make people understand the importance of keeping their personal information safe. Identity theft can take years to correct in most cases.

  11. After graduating from Shaw, I plan to attend law school. According to the American Bar Association the number of minorities being enrolled into their first year of law school is increasing more and more each year. Between 1987 and 2009 the numbers only declined 4 times. But over the last 5 years it has been steadily increasing. In 2009, 11,320 minorities were enrolled into their first year of law school. This makes me happy that more minorities are being seen in law schools and also gives me more inspiration to go.

  12. Hi my major is criminal justice and what i came to think was very interesting it was the amount of people who got arrested in 1970 to 2007 for drugs. The statistics showed that there was more adults that went to jail for drugs than juveniles and increased the more we increased the years. To me this was very interesting because i think it would more juveniles because adults should know better because they are older and should be wiser.

  13. My major is Political Science and I hope one day to become a U.S. Senator or a Represenative of the United States. After looking up some statistics of blacks currently serving in these high positions this is what i found. First, only 13% of Americas population is African American. When we go to the Represenatives i find that only 42 members serve in tha capacity which is about 9.5%. We currently have only one black senator in the United States. This information is important because I hope to serve in one of these offices after graduate school. I also think that their should be more black people in those positions.

  15. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 about 25 percent of computer information system majors work about 50 hours a week. Depending on the size of the whole survy taken, really depends on how big 25 percent will look. Also 50 percent of cis workers make around $88,240 and $141,890 a year. which is a large percent if its based out of 100 this mean about half or maybe more will make the income between those two numbers. From 2008-2018 the rate of employment will increase by 17 percent meaning the rate of work will increase;and work should be available by the time I get out of school

  16. Good evening. My major is Social Work. Statistics are very important in my field because with out them many of us wouldn't have jobs or even know what part of the field we'd want to enter.

I personally want to work with kids. I feel there are so many children who's cries go unheard because they have no one to listen. My goal is to specialize in abused and runaway children and here are some of the statistics that helped me make my decision:

Children who are sexually abused are 2.5 times more likely to develop alcohol abuse and 3.8 times more likely to develop drug addictions.

Atleast 2 of every 10 girls and 1 of every 10 boys are sexually abused by the age of 13.

According to National Child Abuse and Neglect Data Systems (NCANDS), in year 2006, children 1 or under accounted for 44.2 percent of child fatalities.

there were about 3 million child abuse cases reported in the U.S. in the year 2008 alone.

About 5 children die everyday from abuse and maltreatment and about 75 percent of them are under 4 years old in the U.S.

Everyweek about 50,000 cases of child abuse are reported world wide and 67 percent of them are reporting sufficient information that undergoes further investigation.

They broke it down even further 42.6% were victims of crimes against property, 81.9% were victims of destruction/damage/vandalism, 5.9% larceny-theft,4.5% burgualry, 4.4% robbery, and 2.0% arson.

  23. I'm a Sociology major and Domestic Violence is dear to my heart. According statistics found on
"SheKnows.com" a woman is battered every 15 seconds. One in four women will be physically assaulted by her partner. One in three teens will be abused by her boyfriend. While both men and women have been known to carry out acts of violence, 95 percent of hospitalized victims of domestic violence are women. These statistics show that domestic violence is very much a social problem.

  24. my stats are ooming from a personal stand point. this summer i lost my grandmother to a long fight with cancer. So i decided to find stats on how the ACS have found ways and are still finding ways on lowering the cancer rates. ACS reports that " Cancer death rates droped 19.2% among men in 1990-2005 and 11.4% in women in 1991-2005.Cancer incidence rates are also on the decline-they have decreased 1.8% per year among men from 2001-2005 and .6% per year from 1998-2005 among women. The ACS also reports a drop of 1 or 2% per year may not seem like alot, but as the report shows, that adds up to 650,000 cancer deaths avoides over 15 years. And because the rate continues to drop, it means that in recent years about 100,000 people each year who would have died had cancer rates not declined are now living and have a chance to have another birthday. This is a very great study and i hope that things keep going the way they are going and even get better it will give someone else to have a family or stay with their families...

  25. Ok so I typed in interesting statistics and actually found myself interested. It stated that "About 70% of Americans who go to college do it just to make more money. [The rest of us are avoiding reality for four more years.]" Of course the the second part was a joke (maybe)but I found that very interesting because thats not what I thought colloge was built for. I thought it was for higher education. I know there were alot of marches and protest just for me to be able to go to any type of school of equally so I can't imagine just going to "make more money".

  26. My field of study is computer information systems which is one of the highest paying fields at this time. In a recent study by Mr. John Sargent who is a Senior Policy Analyst, in the US Department of Commerce, projected more than 1 million new jobs to be created in the Information Technology sector (i.e. Professional IT occupations) 2002 to 2012. This represented a modification of the 2000-2010 forecasts. However, it shows a more promising job outlook than engineering and life science graduates. (Last updated September 14, 2009)

More than a million new jobs in Professional IT Occupations in the next decade

70% information technology- Averaging to make about $82,000
    13% Engineers
    0% mathematicians
    7% Life Scientists
    7% Physical Scientists
3% Natural Science Managers- Averaging to make about $88,660

Though natural scientists make a little more than technologist, the demand for the position is not as high.

  27. My stats are regarding Haiti. Since the crisis in Haiti has occured you cant escape hearing about the devestation. I went online to find out some facts and stats on the country. my inquery led me to find several sad but true facts about the people of this country. One stat that stuck out to me was involving a health aspect.....Think about this for a few ticks....The United Nations estimates 6% of Haitians are infected with HIV/AIDS. The highest rate in the Western Hemisphere. Although 6% doesnt seem like a very high number, evidently it must be in comparison with other countries...Wow! An estimated 30,000 people die of AIDS every year....One in twenty Haitians is infected with HIV/AIDS and there are over 150,000 AIDS orphans there....In addition to the umemployment, inadequate education, low life expectantcy, and overall general poverty Haiti is a country where the AIDS epedemic is a frightening isssue especially when it affects the children. I wonder how many more orphans will surface in leui of the earth quake?? On another note it saddens me that the people of this country have so many odds stacked against them :( It is really humbling to think of what they must endure and courage they must rely on when their lifestyles are portrayed so hopeless and bleak.
My heart is heavy for these people and my thoughts and prayers go out to them....

  28. My major is Sociology, and i am considering Education for my MS degree, i found information concerning Education and Correctional Population. The report gives data from surveys done by inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities. "Three -quartes of state prison inmates did not earn a high school diploma. The main reason that jailed inmates dropped out of school was behavior or academic problems. Most state prisons offered educational programs. About 66% of state prison inmates have learning disabilities, and 47% of drug offenders, did not complete high school or a GED. Less educated inmates were more likely than educated inmates to be recidivists.
This is important to both my majors, because crime is some what of a societal issue, due to class, race, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Educational, it is insinuating that if more people had better educations they are less likely to commit a crime and become incarcerated. The educational system to me is not well equipt to address all the needs of the students therefor some are left by the wayside or put into institutions that concentrate on their behaviors more so then their education. If students are taught how to provide for themselves, and utilize alternative methods to survive they are less likely to end up in prisons. On another note even with the prison systems having educational programs, prisoners are still subjected to prejudices because of their criminal background and may not get a job they were trained for while in prison, on the outside.

  29. Tyisha that is the "American" way, we go to college to become educated on "how" to make more money. I have an issue with it because say for instance education teachers don't get paid enough to do what they do, but many are in schools for a "paycheck, benefits, and holidays" what about the children? they are being short changed because a few people just want to get Paid.

  30. Social work is my major, it’s profession designed for those with a strong desire to help improve people's lives. Social workers assist people by helping them cope with and solve issues in their everyday lives, such as family and personal problems and dealing with relationships. Some social workers help clients who face a disability, life-threatening disease, social problem, such as inadequate housing, unemployment, or substance abuse. Social workers also assist families that have serious domestic conflicts, sometimes involving child or spousal abuse. They may conduct research, advocate for improved services, or become involved in planning or policy development. Many social workers specialize in serving a particular population or working in a specific setting. In all settings, these workers may also be called licensed clinical social workers, if they hold the appropriate State mandated license. Statistics are very important in my field because with out them many of us wouldn't have jobs or even know what percentage of this are going on in the world such as : rape, drug abuse etc.

  31. HBCUs produce 44 percent of all African American bachelor's degrees awarded for communications technology, 33 percent of bachelor's degrees awarded for engineering technology, and 43 percent of bachelor's degrees awarded for mathematics.
So pretty much my stat is saying that 44 of out of 100 hbcu graduates produce bachelors degrees in communications tech., 33 out of 100 graduates are awarded with bachelor's degrees awarded for engineering technology, and 43 out of 100 graduates are receiving bachelors in mathematics. I think that this stat is important because it shows that hbu's are doing a lot better than what most people think and this will continue to motivated hbcu students.
